The holiday season is a favorite time of the year for many people. For most, the holiday means spending quality time with family and friends, eating some great food, and exchanging gifts.  But with all the holiday fun, homeowners should also be making home security a top priority.

With many people traveling during the holidays, home's become a target for break-ins. To protect your home and specifically the garage from unwanted guests, we want to remind homeowners of the gadgets available from Overhead Door that will help keep your garage and your home safe and secure during the holiday season.

Top gadgets to keep your garage secure

1. The Door Report™ Garage Door Remote

The Door Report™ remote answers the question, "Did I close my garage door?" How does this garage door remote work? When your garage door closes, it will beep while a green light flashes which let's you know your garage door has fully closed. If your garage door doesn't close, a red light will flash with a warning beep.

Most standard garage door opener remotes have an LED indicator light that will flash when a button is pressed and is also used to help program your remote to the opener, but they don't have the safety features and notifications like those that are on the Door Report™ remote.

2. The Advanced Wall Console

remote with screen - advanced security

The Advanced Wall Console is another great gadget to keep your garage safe and secure. It has something called Sure-Lock™ security control built in. This great feature allows homeowners to lock their opener, stopping any external activation from another device.

If someone happened to get your keypad pass code, using the lock feature on the Advanced Wall Console will keep them from opening it.

3. OHDAnywhere™ Garage Door Opener App

app for garage door

If you really want to boost the security of your garage door then the OHDAnywhere™ App is the perfect gadget for you. You will be able control and monitor your garage door from virtually anywhere with your Apple® iPhone or Android phone or device. To check if your garage door is open, all you need to do is go on the app. If you see that it is open, you can close it right from your phone! Now that's pretty cool.

With the OHDAnywhere™, when your garage door opens or closes, you'll get an alert to your phone.

The benefit of this app and device is it uses a sensor that's attached to the garage door, other garage door opener apps are connected to the garage door opener itself. So even if the garage door opener is disconnected from power or the garage door is disconnected with the emergency cord, the OHDAnywhere™ will still work. Since it uses sensors that are separate from the opener, you'll receive an alert on your phone whether your door was opened or closed with the electric opener or lifted by hand. Give us a call to learn more about the OHDAnywhere™ garage door opener app.

4. Garage Door Keypads

Keypads offer a lot of security benefits and there are some benefits you may not realize they have.  Keypads for your garage door give you the ability to set a pass code so only those who know it can gain access to your garage.

Keypads are extremely convenient since they allow you to open your door without having a remote or key.  It's a great for kids returning from school or when going out for a walk or jog.

A great security feature for the keypad is the option to set a temporary PIN.  A temporary PIN allows you to give access to repair people, meter readers, or any other person that needs access to your garage without having to give them your permanent PIN code.  The temporary PIN will remain active until the next time the normal or permanent PIN is entered.

Other helpful gadgets for your garage door

One button key chain remote

The one button remote is a great thing to have for your garage door. Instead of having a remote in your car, the one button remote allows you to clip it on a key chain.

Imagine this situation. You go with a friend shopping and when you get home you need to open your garage door.  So you dig for your keys, open your car door, and then hit the remote button that's clipped on your visor or in your center console.  If you had a one button remote on your key chain, as long as your keys are on you you'll have access to your door without having to go into your car.

Also, if you're like me, you've had to get in your garage door but your car isn't parked at your house. Maybe it's being worked on or parked at a friends house. But having the convenience of a garage door remote on a key chain has helped in many situations.

More buttons, more options

Needing more buttons for a key chain remote? There's also a 3-button remote for your key chain which gives you the option to program up to 3 garage door openers.

Garage door opener remote with flashlight

One of the newest openers from Overhead Door is a garage door opener remote that has two buttons and a built-in LED flashlight.  Think about how many time's you've needed a flashlight. Even phone manufacturers saw the need for this with built-in flashlights on cell phones.  So why not have one that's not your garage door opener that can be easily accessible on your key chain?
